Thus, "Great Britain" is often called instead of "the United Kingdom" or just "UK".Great Britain consists of four parts:England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland, which were separate countries in former times. You can see them on the map. Their capitals are London, Edinburgh, Cardiff and Belfast. The United Kingdom is situated on two island. The greater island of the British Isles is occupied by England, Scotland and Wales. Northern Ireland is situated on the other, smaller island, where the other, independent state -The Republic of Ireland is also located. These two islands are separated by the Irish Sea. Great Britain is separated from the European Mainland by the English Channel. Once the British Isles used to be a part of the Continent. The nearest Point to Europe is the Strait of Dover. People of many nationalities live in Great Britain. The official language is English, but the language of the Welshmen differs greatly from English. Great Britain is a highly developed country, having its own traditions and culture. There are a lot of secondary and high schools, Universities ;among them the world famous ones are Oxford and Cambridge Universities
